Uribe will play third when he returns, Mattingly says
The Dodgers will get Juan Uribe back as early as Monday, but that could create a playing-time crunch for some Dodgers who have been key contributors this season.
Uribe has been sidelined since May 14 with a left wrist injury but is getting close to returning. He will play three rehab games this weekend with Class A Rancho Cucamonga beginning Friday and is expected to be activated when the Dodgers return home Monday.
Manager Don Mattingly said that Uribe would get back his starting job at third base upon his return. Uribe's bat hasn't been much nearly halfway through his three-year, $21 million contract -- he's hitting .250/.302/.338 this year after hitting .204/.264/.293 last year.
But Uribe does provide good defense at third, and if he can provide anywhere close to the bat that hit 40 home runs in 2009 and 2010 combined with San Francisco, then the Dodgers will get a huge upgrade.
But that's not likely. What is likely is that Elian Herrera, who has hit .306 with a .390 on-base percentage, will have to fight for playing time at second base with Adam Kennedy and Jerry Hairston Jr.
Herrera drove in the winning run on Monday night in Philadelphia, then did the same on Tuesday night. "If you drive in the winning run every night, you keep playing," said Mattingly.
We'll see if that's the case when Uribe comes back.
NOTES, QUOTES
Jansen goes 3-for-3 in Phillies series
--RHP Kenley Jansen made it three saves in three days against the Phillies, but it wasn't easy. Jansen, pitching on the third day in a row for the first time this season and the second time in his career, allowed a run and needed 32 pitches to get through the ninth inning. He will likely get a few days off.
--SS Dee Gordon, who made his major league debut one year ago, hit a two-run single in the sixth inning for what proved to be the winning run in the Dodgers' 6-5 win over Philadelphia. Gordon, who has a five-game hitting streak, has hit .309 with a .367 on-base percentage in 16 games since getting benched on May 19.
--RF Andre Ethier went 0-for-5 and is in an 0-for-17 slump. Ethier excelled during Matt Kemp's first stint on the disabled list, hitting .360 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 13 games, but has hit just .103 (3-for-29) with no home runs and two RBI in seven games since Kemp was again placed on the disabled list on May 31.
--RHP Todd Coffey retired four of the five batters he faced, preserving a one-run lead. For Coffey, who has a 6.35 ERA in 13 appearances this season, it was the first time he pitched with a lead of less than four runs since pitching in the 10th inning of a tie game in San Diego on April 7, his first game of the season.
--1B James Loney returned to the starting lineup and went 2-for-4 with a bases-loaded walk. Loney had been held out of the lineup in four of the previous six games, including twice against right-handed pitchers, the first time he sat against right-handed pitching this season.
BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Saves in the last three days for Kenley Jansen, pitching for three straight days for the second time in his career.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "If you drive in the winning run every night, you keep playing." -- Manager Don Mattingly on Elian Herrera, who drove in the winning run Monday and Tuesday night in Philadelphia.
