Twins trade Ryan Doumit to Braves for minor-league pitcher

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins traded catcher Ryan
Doumit to the Atlanta Braves, the team announced on Wednesday. In
return, Minnesota will receive minor-league pitcher Sean Gilmartin from the
Braves.

Doumit, 32, originally signed a two-year deal as a free
agent with the Twins prior to the 2011 season and later signed a contract
extension through 2014. He played a career-high 135 games in 2013 and batted
.247 with 14 home runs and 55 RBI as both a catcher and an outfielder. He is
due to make $3.5 million in 2014. A nine-year veteran with Pittsburgh and
Minnesota, Doumit has a career .268 average with 99 homers and 396 RBI.

Gilmartin is a 23-year-old left-hander who has yet to appear
in the major leagues. He spent the 2013 season with Triple-A Gwinnett, where he
was 3-8 with a 5.74 ERA in 17 starts. The Braves took the 6-foot-2, 190-pound
Gilmartin out of Florida State in the first round of the 2011 draft (28th
overall). He has a career 4.23 ERA in three minor league seasons.

The Twins said Gilmartin will be signed to a minor-league contract and be invited to spring training.
