Twins' Buxton resumes baseball activities

Byron Buxton, the Minnesota Twins' prized 21-year-old center fielder, resumed light baseball activities on Friday, as he attempts to recover from a sprained left thumb.

And, one of the baseball workouts Buxton utilized is somewhat unique.

Twins manager Paul Molitor told reporters that Buxton fielded ground balls and some fly balls.

Buxton also took some swings underwater.

Currently on the 15-day disabled list due to his thumb ailment, Buxton took swings underwater in an effort to strengthen his hand and wrist as he eyes an eventual return to the big leagues this season for the Twins, who entered Friday's action at 51-44 and in second place in the AL Central.

Buxton has missed nearly a month due to his current ailment.

The Twins hope to further finalize Buxton's rehab schedule very soon, said Molitor.

Buxton, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, hit .189 in 37 at-bats earlier this season with the Twins. He also had a .231 on-base percentage and went 1 for 3 on stolen base attempts.

The top prospect missed much of the 2014 campaign in the minor leagues with various injuries, mainly to his wrist. The speedy Buxton had been named the Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America two years ago.

The Baxley, Ga., native also reportedly missed time recently in his rehab following the death of an aunt.
