Trey Burke will remain with Wolverines
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Trey Burke is going to stay at the University of Michigan at least one more season.
Despite numerous reports that the Big Ten Freshman of the Year was going to enter the NBA draft, Burke announced Monday afternoon that he was going withdraw his name from consideration.
"Over the past few weeks, I have spent a lot of time thinking and praying about my future -- not just about next year, but many years down the road," Burke said in a statement. "After gathering information, I am excited to be continuing my education at Michigan as we look to accomplish even more in our 2012-13 season."
Burke took over the point-guard role as a true freshman after Darius Morris left for the NBA. Burke led the team in scoring, assists, steals, minutes played and even blocked shots as the Wolverines tied Michigan State and Ohio State for the Big Ten regular-season title.
However, his possible draft stock may have taken a hit when he struggled badly in a blowout loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament, and again in a loss to Ohio in the NCAA tournament's round of 64.
With Burke returning alongside Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jordan Morgan, as well as the additions of highly ranked recruits Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III, the Wolverines will push for a top-10 preseason ranking and could be the favorites to win another Big Ten championship.
"We loved coaching Trey this season," said Michigan coach John Beilein, who was one of the people counseling Burke on his decision. "It is very unusual to have a freshman point guard play with such poise and confidence all year long. As our team leadership changes hands, I know Trey will join the other returning players as we strive to be the leaders and best in all we do."
Burke averaged 14.8 points and 4.6 assists, and was named second-team All-Big Ten and was an honorable mention All-American.
