Tracking Winston: No travel concerns in week ahead

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The trick to juggling two sports for Jameis Winston this spring has been about the travel.

Winston missed a football practice on March 22 so that he could play baseball at Clemson. But last weekend, the logistics were challenging as the baseball team played Boston College at Kingston, R.I. So Winston instead stayed in Tallahassee with the football team, while the No. 1 Seminoles (22-5, 9-2 ACC) swept their weekend baseball series.

This week will be busy but the Heisman Trophy winner will only have a short walk between the locker rooms. Winston will scrimmage with the football team on Monday afternoon and practice Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The baseball team has home games scheduled for Tuesday and a Friday-Saturday-Sunday series with visiting Notre Dame.

Winston could play both sports on Saturday as the football team will likely practice late in the morning and he can then break before the baseball team plays at 6 p.m.

"He'll be able to go back forth," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said of Winston's schedule this week.

HAT'S OFF

Winston's trip to Jacksonville on Tuesday included a benches-clearing scuffle that lasted about 90 seconds in Florida's 4-1 win. No punches were thrown and nobody was injured.

But while Winston didn't play that night, he did take time to sign autographs for fans -- including one for this Gators fan.

ON THE MOUND

The right-hander has the lowest ERA of anyone on the team with five or more appearances. Winston has a 0.69 ERA and four saves with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings. Opponents are hitting just .133.

AT THE PLATE

Winston is hitting .211 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored in 19 at-bats, mostly as a designated hitter.

IN THE FIELD

He hasn't played much outfield, but Winston does not have an error this season.

NEXT UP

The football team holds four practices this week. And the baseball team hosts Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday and then Notre Dame on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Florida State concludes spring football with its Garnet and Gold game on April 13 at 3 p.m.
