TMS could add second IndyCar race
FORT WORTH, Texas — There's a possibility that the new opening in the IndyCar Series schedule could be filled with a season-ending race at Texas Motor Speedway.
But things would have to come together quickly.
The Aug. 19 IndyCar Series race in China was canceled Wednesday and Indy series CEO Randy Bernard said the series is looking for another race in the second half of the season.
TMS president Eddie Gossage confirmed his track has talked with the series about another race but it would be tough logistically.
TMS already hosts a tripleheader Sprint Cup race in November. Adding another race weekend in fall would take some work.
"The thought is intriguing to potentially have Texas Motor Speedway once again play host to the INDYCAR seasons finale, just like we did from 1999 to 2004, in the nation's fourth largest media market," Gossage said in a statement. "However, we did not have the AAA Texas 500 NASCAR tripleheader in early November at that time and a September or early October date could pose several obstacles on a variety of fronts that we would have to consider before making a decision."
Gossage said the decision would have to be made quickly.
TMS has hosted more IndyCar Series races than any other track and had two races annually from 1998 through 2004.
On the current IndyCar schedule, the Sept. 15 race in Fontana, Calif., is the series finale.
