Tigers decline Peralta's option for 2011

Detroit -- The Detroit Tigers have declined shortstop Jhonny Peralta's $7.25 million option for next season but say they still hope to re-sign him.

Team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said Tuesday the club is "optimistic" a deal can be worked out. Peralta will receive a $250,000 buyout.

The Tigers acquired Peralta from Cleveland in July for minor league left-hander Giovanni Soto. Peralta hit .253 with eight home runs in 57 games with Detroit. For the season, he batted .249 with 15 home runs in 148 games.

Peralta played third base for the Indians this season but was primarily a shortstop for the Tigers. That would probably be the case again if he returns, because Detroit recently re-signed third baseman Brandon Inge.
