Texans release former second-round pick Swearinger
Now-former Houston Texans safety D.J. Swearinger let the cat out of the bag early about his release from the team via social media.
Monday evening, the Texans made it official that the third-year safety would be released. According to reports, Houston has been trying to trade Swearinger since before the draft but were unsuccessful.
"Every decision we make is in the best interests of our team and winning," head coach Bill O'Brien said Monday before the Texans' annual charity golf tournament.
Swearinger was drafted by the Texans in 2013 out of South Carolina. The safety was a part of the last class of players drafted by former head coach Gary Kubiak. He started 12 games for Houston in 2014, playing in the other four games as a bench player. As the season wore on, Swearinger's playing time was reduced in favor of veteran Danieal Manning. He finished the season with 73 tackles, two interceptions and three forced fumbles.
