Sun Devils sweep Washington State behind freshman Bailey

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Behind a 15-kill night from freshman BreElle Bailey, the Arizona State volleyball team topped Washington State in straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) on Wednesday in Wells Fargo Arena.

With the win, ASU improves to 16-9 on the year with a 5-8 mark in Pac-12 play, while Washington State falls to 16-10 on the year with a 3-10 mark in conference action. The win also marks ASU’s 14th win via a 3-0 sweep.

The Sun Devils took a 21-17 lead late into the first set of action, led by a frame-high six kills from Bailey before Washington State used a 3-0 run to cut the lead to one point. ASU then used a pair of kills from Sophomore Macey Gardner and another from Bailey to pick up the set, 25-22.

In the second set, Washington State came out with an early lead before Bailey smacked one over the net to tie things up at 12-12. Sophomore Mercedes Binns then picked up a kill on an overpass to give the Sun Devils the 13-12 edge and ASU never looked back before Bailey picked up her 11th kill of the night at set-point, 25-22.

Freshman Whitney Follette, who was error-free for the match with eight kills and a .571 hitting percentage, had a standout final set with three kills in six attempts and a trio of solo blocks. After an early battle for the lead, ASU jumped out to a 13-7 advantage before the Sun Devils won the match on a Washington State attack error, 25-17.

Junior Shannan McCready dished out 35 helpers on the night while senior Stephanie Preach picked up 19 digs for the match.

For the Cougars, reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week Kyra Holt paced the squad with 11 kills while Camryn Irwin threw up 32 assists.

Up next, the Sun Devils will host No. 3 Washington on Saturday in Wells Fargo Arena. The match is set for a Noon MT start and will be streamed live through thesundevils.com. Prior to the match, ASU will honor its four seniors: Stephanie Preach, Jenny Teslevich, Caitlyn Francis, and Bethany Jorgensen.
