Sudden Surprise wins NY Stallion Stakes at Aqueduct
NEW YORK (AP) Sudden Surprise delivered another win Sunday, beating Dr. Shane by a half-length in the $150,000 New York Stallion Stakes for 2-year-olds at Aqueduct.
The colt owned and bred by former beverage executive Mike Repole improved to 5 for 6.
John Velazquez returned from Gulfstream Park to ride the 1-5 favorite for trainer Todd Pletcher.
''It was an easy day down there in Florida, so I might as well take the call here,'' Velazquez said. ''I try to follow him, so I don't lose him.''
It was strictly a two-horse race. Sudden Surprise set the pace with Dr. Shane following closely in second.
Those two were 9 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Bluegrass Prevails.
Sudden Surprise paid $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10.
Dr. Shane returned $2.80 and $2.10. Bluegrass Prevails paid $3.10 to show.
The time was 1:11.38 for six furlongs.
