Steyn 3-9 to leave NZ 18-4, facing defeat in 2nd test

CENTURION, South Africa (AP) South Africa's Dale Steyn took 3-9 to leave New Zealand 18-4 in its second innings and facing defeat in the second test on Tuesday.

New Zealand needs 400 to win or to survive for a day-and-a-half for a draw to save the two-game series.

Steyn put South Africa on course for victory with his burst, removing openers Tom Latham and Martin Guptill for ducks in the first over of the innings. Steyn bowled Latham first ball of the innings.

Fellow quick Vernon Philander took the prize wicket of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson (5), and Steyn added Ross Taylor lbw for another duck.

Temba Bavuma made 40 not out as South Africa declared its second innings on 132-7, leaving the New Zealanders a target of 400 on a tough pitch to bat on.
