StaTuesday: Ranking Packers' McCarthy among NFL coaches

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy got a contract extension during the season through the 2019 season.

You can debate all you want on if he deserved it or not. Here, we're more concerned with how McCarthy compared to other NFL coaches. Thanks to a new website we can do just that.

Headcoachranking.com rates every NFL coach each week and compiles a ranking system. Every game, they rate a coach on five factors: Play calling, how well they utilize their personnel, strategy of game plans, in-game adjustments and clock management. You can read more detail on each as well as their grading process here.

The site graded McCarthy highly after Week 1's victory over Seattle, but it went way down the next week following a loss to Atlanta. From Week 4 to the end of the season, McCarthy was in something of a downward trajectory -- losing Aaron Rodgers to injury obviously didn't help, and there was even a slight boost in Week 14 upon Rodgers' one-game return.

On a 10-point scale, here were the site's rankings for McCarthy along with the overall rank (note: for the Giants, the site uses only Steve Spagnuolo's tenure and not Ben McAdoo's):

Play calling -- 6.3 (T16)

Personnel -- 6.9 (T12)

Game plan -- 6.3 (T24)

In-game adjustments -- 7.1 (T8)

Clock management -- 6.5 (T20)

In the overall rankings, McCarthy came in at tied for 17th, lower than the since-fired Jim Caldwell (T13) but higher than since-fired John Fox (T25). Each of the top-six ranked coaches is in the playoffs as well as seven of the top nine and nine of the top 12. The only coach in the playoffs who is ranked lower than McCarthy is Buffalo's Sean McDermott while Tennessee's Mike Mularkey has the same rating heading into the postseason.
