Sooners hire Pete Hughes as new baseball coach

Oklahoma advanced to the NCAA baseball Super Regional by winning at Virginia Tech.

Thursday, the Sooners hired Tech’s coach, Pete Hughes.

"Pete Hughes is an ideal choice as our new baseball coach," said University of Oklahoma president David L. Boren in a statement "He is not only a talented coach, above all, he shares the best values of our university family. He will be a player-oriented coach. We enthusiastically welcome him to OU."

Hughes is the ninth baseball coach in Sooner history. He replaces Sunny Golloway, who left earlier this month for Auburn.

Hughes recorded five straight 30-win seasons at Virginia Tech, including a pair of 40-win seasons. He took the Hokies to the NCAA tournament in 2010 and 2013. He was 222-174 in seven seasons at Tech.

"As we conducted our research, we kept finding more and more reasons why Pete Hughes would be an excellent fit to lead the OU Baseball program," said OU athletic director Joe Castiglione. "First and foremost, Pete brings a winning pedigree as a head coach with NCAA postseason experience. His proven track record as an accomplished national recruiter was also a prerequisite for OU Baseball."

Hughes was also the head coach at Boston College for eight seasons.
