Son of former Rockies general manager suspended 80 games

NEW YORK (AP) Atlanta Braves catcher Chris O'Dowd, a son of former Colorado manager Dan O'Dowd, has been suspended for 80 games under baseball's minor league drug program.

The 24-year-old tested positive for Testosterone metabolites of external origin, the commissioner's office said Wednesday.

O'Dowd is hitting .304 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 79 at-bats for Mississippi of the Double-A Southern League.

He attended Dartmouth after he was taken by Oakland on the 40th round of the 2009 amateur draft and decided not to sign.

San Diego drafted O'Dowd on the 23rd round with the 705th overall pick in 2012. He was released on March 28, 2013, and signed with Colorado three days later. The Rockies traded him to Atlanta this past Jan. 30.

There have been 54 suspensions this year under the minor league drug program.

Dan O'Dowd was the Rockies' general manager from September 1999 until last October, then was hired as an analyst for the MLB Network. He declined comment.
