Royals' roster expansion includes one surprise: Eric Hosmer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In a series of moves to beef up their major-league roster while taking advantage of expanded September rosters, the Royals' most surprising move was to recall first baseman Eric Hosmer from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha after just two games.
Manager Ned Yost had indicated Hosmer would need 15 to 20 at-bats to get his timing back.
The crucial error by first baseman Billy Butler on Sunday night that led to two go-ahead runs for the Indians likely played into the Hosmer decision.
Also recalled from Omaha were right-hander Casey Coleman, infielder Johnny Giavotella and catcher Francisco Pena. Recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas was outfielder Lane Adams. Those four players were all on the 40-man roster and are likely to be in Kansas City today.
The Royals also selected the contracts of power-hitting outfielder Carlos Peguero from Omaha and Brandon Finnegan, the left-hander who was the team's No. 1 pick this June. Finnegan was at Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
Finnegan and Peguero, who hit 30 homers with 76 RBI for Omaha this season, also are expected to be in Kansas City today.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated left-hander Chris Dwyer and right-hander Blake Wood for assignment.
On Tuesday, when Northwest Arkansas' season ends, the Royals will be able to recall infielder Christian Colon, outfielder Terrance Gore and right-handers Aaron Crow and Liam Hendriks.
