Royals' 2016 season will kick off with historic visit from Mets
You can officially get your 2016 summer travel plans in order, Kansas City Royals fans. The schedule is set.
Opening Day will take place April 4 when the Royals welcome the New York Mets to Kauffman Stadium. It marks the first time in franchise history that the Royals have opened the season against a team from the National League. The two-game visit by the Mets also marks their first trip to Kansas City since June 11-13, 2004.
Kansas City will play 20 interleague contests over eight series, with four home and four on the road. The Royals will compete against their I-70 rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, in back-to-back two-game series spanning both cities. The Cardinals visit The K on June 27-28 and the Royals return the trip June 29-30. The club will also hostiInterleague matchups against Washington (May 2-4) and Atlanta (May 13-15); both teams traveled here during the 2013 season. The road interleague schedule consists of visits to Citi Field to play the Mets (June 21-22) as well as Philadelphia (July 1-3) and Miami (Aug. 23-25) for the team's first-ever series at Marlins Park.
Kansas City's holiday schedule sees the Royals at home on Memorial Day vs. Cleveland (May 8) and Father's Day vs. Detroit (June 19) and on the road in Cleveland on Mother's Day (May 8), in Toronto on Independence Day (July 4) and in Minnesota for Labor Day (Sept. 5).
