Rival watch: Cardinals place Holliday on DL

The Cincinnati Reds took a step toward catching the second-place Pirates with a 5-3 win last night, and their pursuit of first-place St. Louis received a potential boost Saturday when the Cardinals placed outfielder Matt Holliday on the disabled list. 
Holliday, who made the All-Star team the past three seasons but not this one, has been bothered by the injury for more than a week but had been holding out hope he would be able to avoid the DL. 

The move was made retroactive to July 12, so he will be eligible to return as soon as July 27. The Cardinals and Reds are next scheduled to tangle Aug. 2 in St. Louis. 
To replace Holliday, the Cardinals called up first baseman/outfielder Brock Peterson, an 11-year minor leaguer having an all-star season with Triple-A Memphis at the age of 29. 
Holliday is having a so-so season so far with 13 homers and 47 RBIs. His .268 batting average this season is 42 points below his career average and his .800 OPS is 115 points below his career average in that category. 
The Reds (54-42) enter play Saturday three games back of Pittsburgh (56-38) and five back of the Cardinals (58-36).
