Rangers pick up right-hander from Padres
The Texas Rangers added another arm for spring training by acquiring right-hander Cory Burns from San Diego for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Burns, who was designated for assignment by the Padres last week, made his major-league debut with San Diego by pitching in 17 games last season. He allowed 11 runs in 18 innings. He spent most of the season in Triple A Tucson, going 1-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 54 appearances.
He was drafted by Cleveland in the eighth round in 2009 and traded to San Diego last December. He had 35 saves in Double A in 2011 and totaled 42 in 2002 at two minor-league stops.
Burns puts the Rangers at 39 players on the 40-man roster.
Texas also agreed to terms with infielder Yangervis Solarte and right-hander Collin Balester on minor-league deals. Both will go to spring training with the Rangers.
