Rangers' Perez has Tommy John surgery

Texas Rangers left-hander Martin Perez had surgery Monday morning to repair the partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

The surgery, which was performed by team doctor Keith Meister in Arlington, went as expected. The Tommy John procedure is expected to sideline Perez for at least 12 months.

Perez was 4-3 with a 4.38 ERA. He complained of tightness in his left arm after his May 9 start against Boston and was put on the disabled list with left elbow inflammation. A later MRI revealed the tear.

Perez is the American League leader in complete games and shutouts with two. Those came in back-to-back starts in April. He was named the team’s player of the month for April.
