Rangers get good news on Holland
SAN FRANCISCO — While the West Coast road trip for the Texas Rangers isn't going well, they did get good news on the injury front.
An examination of Derek Holland's left shoulder Friday showed no structural damage. There are signs of fatigue in the shoulder, but it's related to the stomach virus Holland has been battling for more than two weeks.
"I was generally relieved with the news," general manager Jon Daniels said. "Dr. (Keith) Meister doesn't feel there are any structural issues. We want to make sure we get him right. With the weight loss and the strength loss, he was out there potentially exposed to hurting his arm. We're going to give him the time to put the weight back on and get his strength back."
Holland, who went on the disabled list Thursday, won't throw for a week, so he'll have time to build up his strength and try to put on some of the 15 pounds he's lost. But Daniels said he's confident if Holland can resume throwing after that he should be able to ramp up his throwing program quickly.
Holland's rotation spot was taken by reliever Alexi Ogando, who will make his first start Sunday against San Francisco.
