Rams wild run continues, trade for WR Brandin Cooks

Stop us if you've heard this one before: the Los Angeles gained a massive star today.

On the eve of the Rams introducing one of the biggest defensive free agent acquisitions of the offseason in Ndamukong Suh to the media, general manager Les Snead decided to shake the landscape of the NFL once again.

The Rams traded their first (23rd overall) and sixth round picks to the New England Patriots in return for star wide receiver Brandin Cooks and a fourth-round selection, the team announced Tuesday.

Cooks, who is in the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, joins a star-studded list of offseason acquisitions for the Rams, but is the first one on the offensive side of the ball. After the departure of wide receiver Sammy Watkins, the Rams were in need of a deep-threat option to work alongside Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp; they found that option in Cooks.

Cooks has gained over 1,000 yards each of the past three seasons, totaling 24 touchdowns during that period. In 2017, his only season with the Patriots after being traded from the New Orleans Saints for the 32nd overall pick the previous offseason, Cooks tallied 75 catches for 1,237 yards and seven touchdowns. He also was tied for the league lead with 16 catches of passes thrown 20+ yards downfield (DeAndre Hopkins - HOU).

The Rams finished with the highest scoring offense in the NFL in the regular season in 2017 and will look to use Cooks to tack on to the success Jared Goff and Todd Gurley found heading into the second year of head coach Sean McVay's tenure.

Following the trade, the Rams will be without a first-round selection for the second consecutive year and will not be on the clock until the third round with the 83rd overall pick.

That is, until the Rams strike again.
