Prize Exhibit wins Monrovia Stakes by nose at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Prize Exhibit held off Shrinking Violet by a nose to win the $200,000 Monrovia Stakes for older fillies and mares on Sunday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Santiago Gonzalez, Prize Exhibit ran 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course in 1:12.96 and paid $17.80, $7.60 and $4.20.
Shrinking Violet returned $7.40 and $4, while Ageless was another half-length back in third and paid $2.60 to show.
The victory, worth $120,000, increased Prize Exhibit's career earnings to $530,800, with six wins in 20 starts. Trained by Jim Cassidy, it was the England-bred's first try on the track's turf course.
''She's a superior horse,'' Gonzalez said. ''She runs better races than these other horses regularly and she showed her class today. She has a lot of speed. I can wait, and wait with her and I know she can still get there with her speed.''
