Players choose Hernandez over Kluber, DeGrom over Hamilton

If the player votes mirror next week's announcement of the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young awards, then it doesn't bode well for the Indians' Corey Kluber and Reds' Billy Hamilton.

The MLB Players Choice Awards were released Monday night as Seattle's Felix Hernandez won the AL Award for Outstanding Pitcher and the Mets' Jacob DeGrom was selected the NL's Outstanding Rookie.

The players have elected an Outstanding Pitcher in both leagues since 1994. In the American League there has been only one time it has differed from who the writers voted for as the Cy Young winner. In 2010, the players voted Tampa Bay's David Price but the Cy Young went to Hernandez. In 1998, the players had a tie between Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens but Clemens won the Cy Young.

For Hamilton there might be a little bit of hope. The players and writers have differed seven times with the most recent case being 2012 when the players voted for the Reds' Todd Frazier and the writers selected the Nationals' Bryce Harper.

The White Sox Chris Sale was the other finalist for AL Outstanding Pitcher and Arizona's David Peralta rounded out the list for NL Outstanding Rookie.

The BBWAA will name their finalists for Rookie and Manager of the year along with the Cy Young and MVP Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year for both leagues will be announced next Monday and the Cy Young on Nov. 12.
