Padres to play spring training game against Chihuahuas in El Paso

The San Diego Padres and El Paso Chihuahuas announced today that they will play a spring training exhibition game on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Southwest University Park in El Paso, Texas, which will be the first meeting between the two teams.

The game will also mark the first time the Padres and a Minor League affiliate will play since the Friars played the Lake Elsinore Storm (Class-A Advanced) in 2010.

"Southwest University Park is one of the best venues in Minor League Baseball, and we know the fans in El Paso create an unforgettable game environment here," Padres President and CEO Mike Dee said in a press release sent out by the El Paso Chihuahuas on Wednesday. "The players and coaches who have played here in the past are looking forward to returning, and those who have not are looking forward to experiencing it firsthand, as we make our first trip to El Paso."

Some of the current Padres who have ties to El Paso include interim manager Pat Murphy and players Austin Hedges, Colin Rea and Travis Jankowski.
