Packers take OT Murphy in 6th round of NFL Draft

The Green Bay Packers used their sixth-round draft pick on former Stanford offensive tackle Kyle Murphy.

Murphy has played both left and right tackle and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a senior.

In the short term, he'll provide depth on a starting five that could be one of the best in the game when healthy. His main job is to protect two-time MVP Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.

Here is his STATS Inc. pre-draft bio:

There's plenty to like about Murphy, but NFL teams believe he has too many shortcomings to ignore when considering where in the draft he'll be taken. Murphy earned second-team All-Pac 12 honors as a right tackle his junior season, then made a successful transition to the left side last season and improved his stock by showing some versatility. He's been lauded for his run-blocking skills and ability to hold his ground while pushing tacklers in his desired direction. What concerns scouts is how he's far less effective in the passing game because of his poor footwork and lack of speed. Murphy tends to release his position and stand tall rather than keeping his center of gravity toward the ground, allowing pass rushers to slip past him or easily move him out of the way. Murphy will have to improve his strength once he gets into an NFL camp, something teams believe will help him progress into a starter at the next level eventually. He has enough skills to contribute on obvious running downs, but there are likely too many questions for him to be selected any earlier than the fourth or fifth round.
