Packers open eyes, draft UCLA QB Hundley

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There's a new (backup) quarterback in town. The Green Bay Packers traded up 19 spots in the fifth round and selected UCLA's Brett Hundley.

This is the earliest the Packers have drafted a quarterback since picking Brian Brohm in the second round in 2008. Green Bay last drafted a quarterback in 2012 with B.J. Coleman, but that wasn't until the seventh round.

"You guys asked me last time if each draft pick has a chance to start; this one doesn't," director of player personnel Eliot Wolf quipped as he began his press conference after drafting Hundley.

Hundley was a three-year college starter, completing 67.4 percent of his passes for 9,966 yards. He had 75 touchdown passes and threw 25 interceptions.

Wolf said he was "shocked" that Hundley was still on the board in the fifth round. Wolf described Hundley as "a football nerd" who was "really engaging and eager to please."

Hundley measured at 6-foot-3 and 226 pounds, running a 4.63 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine.

The Packers gave up their fifth-round pick (No. 166) and their seventh-round pick (No. 247) to move up and select Hundley.
