Packers cut LB Jones, add $3.7M in cap room

In the first step of what could be a major offseason makeover at inside linebacker, the Green Bay Packers released Brad Jones.

Jones had one season remaining on the three-year, $11.25 million contract he signed in March 2013. Getting rid of Jones will free up an additional $3.75 million of cap space for the Packers this offseason.

"We thank Brad for his contributions and dedication to the Packers over the past six years," general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. "We wish him all the best."

Jones, 28, was a seventh-round pick by Green Bay in 2009. He started at least one game in each of his six seasons with the Packers.

Jones was coming off a career-best 2012 season that included starting 10 games when Green Bay decided to make a multiyear commitment to him. The Packers were competing with the Tennessee Titans in free agency at the time for Jones' services.

However, Jones never lived up to his new contract. He started 12 games in 2013, but the results weren't good and inside linebacker became a problem area for Green Bay.

Jones entered this past season as an every-down player. He was on the field for all 70 snaps of the Packers' Week 1 loss at Seattle. However, Jones didn't start another game all year and played an average of just 8.7 snaps per game after that.
