Packers awarded compensatory draft pick
GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers have been awarded one compensatory draft pick from the NFL based on the free-agent results of the 2012 offseason. That compensatory pick is a fifth-round selection, No. 167 overall in the upcoming April draft.
To qualify for receiving compensatory draft picks, a team must have lost more or better free agents than it acquired. For Green Bay in 2012, losing quarterback Matt Flynn and center Scott Wells while acquiring center Jeff Saturday equated to a fifth-round compensatory pick.
This year, the NFL awarded a total of 32 compensatory choices to 16 teams. The Houston Texans were given the best of these draft picks, a third-round selection (No. 95 overall). The compensatory picks are positioned within the third and seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents that each team lost.
Since 1994, the Packers have been awarded the second-most compensatory draft picks (31), trailing only Baltimore (37).
The other Packers' draft spots in 2013 include No. 26 overall (first round), No. 55 overall (second round) and No. 88 overall (third round). Green Bay also has a pick in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh round.
