Outkick's Top Ten For Week 5
I'm going to be honest with y'all, I have no idea what's going on this college football season. It's only the first week of October and it's already hard to find ten teams that actually deserve to be ranked in the Outkick top ten. Last week's top ten is a mess as four of our top ten Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Georgia, and UCLA all lost, meanwhile, two more of our top ten members, Michigan State and Ohio State, were awful.
So there are a ton of changes this week.
Honestly, this week's top ten is tough to put together because I'm not sure what we really know about many teams after five weeks.
Remember, I'm only ranking teams based on their actual game performances, not their preseason expectations. And, as always, if your team isn't ranked, it's because I hate them.
1. Utah
The Utes didn't play so they remain Outkick's number one team.
2. Texas A&M
The Aggies were dominant against Mississippi State and, lo and behold, Arizona State went on the road and got a massive win at UCLA. So that season opening win by 21 looks pretty decent now too. Kyle Allen looks like the best quarterback in the SEC.
How big does that game against Alabama at Kyle Field in two weeks look now?
3. Baylor
The Bears crushed Texas Tech, the team that came within a bad bounce of beating TCU last week. Right now I believe Baylor is the best team in the Big 12. Am I right?
We'll see.
But no matter who your team is do you feel good about stopping this offense?
4. Florida
I know this seems crazy, but the Gators destroyed Ole Miss and are now 3-0 in the SEC. That defense is legit and a young team suddenly has an awful lot of confidence after a huge comeback against Tennessee and a trouncing of Ole Miss.
And if you're ranking wins, how many teams have better wins than beating Ole Miss, my number two team last week, by 28 points?
5. Clemson
The Tigers nearly collapsed against Notre Dame, but they got the win. Now they will be favored in the final eight games of the season. Can they run the table? They'd better. Because that's the only way I see an ACC team making the playoff.
6. Alabama
The Crimson Tide crushed Georgia and now will be favored in every game for the rest of the year. Yes, they have a loss, but how do you not reward that win over Georgia? It was eerily similar to the blackout game seven years ago.
As for Georgia, sigh, I'm sorry Bulldog fans.
And for all you Ole Miss fans saying, "But we beat Alabama!" Well, don't lose by 28 to Florida and you'd still be ranked higher than Alabama.
7. Oklahoma
The Sooners got it done against West Virginia and look to be the second best team in the Big 12. I know, I know, TCU looked great against Texas, but there are going to be a lot of teams this year that look great against Texas. I'm not sold on TCU.
8. Northwestern
Would you have ever believed that Northwestern would be 5-0 and headed to Michigan undefeated? And how good does that Northwestern win over Stanford look now? It's one of the five best wins any team in the country has this year. Right now I have Stanford as my 11th best team.
9. LSU
LSU's game against Florida looks quite a bit more challenging now, but what can you really learn from their performance against Eastern Michigan? The Tigers should still be undefeated when they go to Tuscaloosa late in the season.
Until then it's time to make sure Leonard Fournette remains the Heisman front runner.
10. Iowa
The Hawkeyes are 5-0 and if you compare their resume with Ohio State and Michigan State, it's better than both teams. In fact, do you know who else looks better than Ohio State and Michigan State? Michigan. They're my number 12 team right now.
