Old Dominion rallies for win over Liberty
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Taylor Heinicke threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Blair Roberts with 28 seconds remaining as Old Dominion overcame a frustrating night in a 21-17 victory over Liberty on Saturday.
Heinicke, last year's Payton Award winner, passed for 450 yards on a 39-of-52 night, but also was intercepted twice in the end zone by Kenny Scott. The Monarchs had scored 50 or more points in their three previous games.
ODU (4-2) trailed after John Lunsford kicked a 52-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, giving the Flames (3-3) a 10-7 lead. ODU lost two fumbles in that half and was also stopped at the Liberty 4.
A Josh Woodrum TD pass made it 17-7 in the third quarter.
ODU had another drive end at the Liberty 1 in the fourth quarter before given a spark by Aaron Evans' 64-yard punt return to get within 17-14.
