NFL rookie reportedly tells cops: 'You can't arrest me, I'm a Colts player'
By Andy Nesbitt, FOXSports.com Indianapolis Colts rookie safety John Boyett was arrested early Monday morning on preliminary charges of disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and resisting law enforcement, according to a report by the Indianapolis Star. The report says Boyett, a safety listed as being on the reserve/non-football injury list, became very angry after not being allowed into a bar in downtown Indianapolis because he was too intoxicated. According to a police report on the incident, Boyett, who played college football at Oregon, allegedly told the police "You can’t arrest me, I’m a Colts player" and became "very abusive." The report also stated that Boyett threatened a police officer, saying "I am going to come back and break your jaw." The Indy Star has more details:
The incident began when an employee from Tiki Bob’s bar approached a uniformed police officer working in the 200 block of South Meridian Street at about 2:45 a.m. The worker reported a man was refusing to leave after being denied entry because he was “too intoxicated.” The report said Boyett “cussed at patrons of the bar and people on the sidewalk.” By the time the officer returned to the bar with the employee, Boyett was gone. But a few minutes later, Boyett reportedly returned to the bar and was approached by the police officer. When the officer attempted to place Boyett under arrest, the report said, he pulled away and threw a “stiff arm” at the officer. Boyett then ran northbound along Meridian Street. The report said Boyett continued fleeing, running onto Georgia Street and then through two alleys before he was caught. The report said it took four officers to finally subdue and handcuff Boyett, who is 5-feet-10 inches tall and weighs in at 203 pounds, according to the Colts website. “Mr. Boyett had an odor of an alcoholic beverage about his person, his speech was slurred, his eyes were red and glassy, and he had a very abusive behavior toward everyone,” the report said.
The Colts have not commented on the incident but are looking into it, according to the Indy Star.
