NAU's Cookus, Butler honored after Week 1 win

Northern Arizona quarterback Case Cookus and wide receiver Emmanuel Butler were honored for their play in the Lumberjacks' 34-28 win on Saturday.

Cookus, a redshirt freshman, was named the STATS LLC FCS Freshman of the Week, after he completed 13-of-18 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. His touchdown passes of 57 and 47 yards -- both to Butler -- helped NAU defeat their first FCS opponent in a season opener since 2003. Cookus also tallied 10 carries for 41 yards, including a 1-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

Butler, a sophomore from Phoenix, was named co-Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week along with Eastern Washington's Cooper Kupp.

Butler totaled 216 receiving yards against Stephen F. Austin. Butler finished 30 yards shy of breaking the 36-year old school record for single game receiving yards (245). Butler averaged 15 yards per catch more than any other receiver in the conference this past week and did so with half as many catches.
