Mr. Commons wins Opening Day stakes

Mr. Commons defeated Burns by 1-1/2 lengths Wednesday to win the $112,100 Oceanside Stakes on Opening Day at Del Mar.

The largest crowd in Del Mar history — 46,588 — watched as Mr. Commons, ridden by Mike Smith, breezed to an impressive victory Wednesday.

Mr. Commons ran one mile on grass in 1 minute, 34.96 seconds and paid $4.20 as the favorite.

The attendance Wednesday exceeded the track record set a year ago on Opening Day, when 45,309 turned out.
