Monmouth Park to average $1 million daily purses

Horse racing officials in New Jersey have agreed on a plan to stage a million-dollar meet at Monmouth Park, lower the number of thoroughbred racing dates in the state and make the Meadowlands a harness racing-only track.

The dramatic shift was announced Monday by New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority Chief Executive Dennis Robinson.

The changes still require legislative approval.

The plan calls for Monmouth to offer $1 million in average daily purses, by far the highest in North America.

The meet begins May 22, with 50 live racing dates through Labor Day. The track would also run on weekends through Nov. 21 with reduced purses.

The Meadowlands would run harness racing in the fall.
