MLS Roundup: Montréal retains Canadian Championship, Finlay lifts Columbus to draw

Montréal 1 – Toronto FC 0 – Canadian Championship, second leg – Montréal retains title 2-1 on aggregate

Felipe Martins thrashed home a rebound in the late stages to allow the Impact to retain the Canadian Championship with a victory at Stade Saputo. Montréal entered the return leg on home soil with a narrow edge on away goals after the 1-1 draw at BMO Field a week ago. Frank Klopas’ side enjoyed the majority of the play on the evening, though Jonathan Osorio hit the post as TFC started to press seven minutes from time. The winner came moments later as Marco Di Vaio smashed an effort off the crossbar and watched Felipe calmly slot home the rebound in second-half stoppage time. TFC pushed for the equalizer necessary to force extra time, but the Impact held out to defend its title.

Columbus 1 – Real Salt Lake 1

Columbus claimed a deserved point when second-half substitute Ethan Finlay clipped home a late equalizer at Crew Stadium. The home side sustained a blow before the interval when Federico Higuaín limped off with a suspected hamstring injury. RSL then took advantage when play resumed after Luis Gil tapped home a rebound at the far post after a good initial save from Steve Clark. Columbus adopted the initiative after conceding and forced Jeff Attinella into several fine stops before Finlay raced onto Ben Speas’ throughball and snatched the tying goal two minutes from time.

Colorado 0 – Chicago 0

Both reserve-laden lineups struggled to produce chances in this dull draw at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Most of the modest action occurred in the second half, though Sean Johnson stopped Charles Eloundou’s effort eight minutes before the break. Juan Luis Anangonó headed Chicago’s best chance wide in the final quarter of an hour, while Sean Johnson repelled Deshorn Brown in the late stages to ensure the Fire left Commerce City with a point.
