Michael Sam released from Cowboys' practice squad

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted in to the NFL, was released from the Cowboys' practice squad on Tuesday.

Sam had been with the Cowboys since being signed Sept. 3 after his release from the St. Louis Rams, the team that originally drafted him in the seventh round last May.

Sam, the SEC co-defensive player of the year last season at Missouri, was never promoted to the Cowboys' active roster. That's notable because Sam is a pass rush specialist and the Cowboys have one of the lowest sack totals in the NFL with just seven.

The Cowboys expect to "add" a pass rusher in two weeks with the return of second round draft pick DeMarcus Lawrence from the short-term injured reserve list.

To replace Sam on the practice squad, the Cowboys signed linebacker Troy Davis. They also added defensive tackle Ken Bishop to the practice squad.
