Meet the Braves: Anthony Varvaro
FOXSportsSouth.com invites you to meet the Braves as we continue a month-long look at our team, player-by-player. We'll revisit 2011 and project what 2012 might look like.
Anthony Varvaro
Position:
Pitcher
Height: 6-0
Weight: 195
Bat/Throw: R/R
Hometown: New York
Experience: Third season
2011 in review: He spent the season bouncing between Atlanta and Triple-A Gwinnett, going 0-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 24 innings with the Braves. They signed Varvaro after the Mariners designated him for assignment on Jan. 3, 2011.
Career highlight: Varvaro allowed only one run in his final six innings of 2011, but is still looking for his first major league victory.
Outlook: With his ability to strike out batters, Varvaro could land one of the final spots out of the bullpen coming out of spring training, but he gave up two hits and a run in his first appearance on March. 3. He must continue to work on his control after walking 46 batters in 83 innings between Triple-A Gwinnett and the Braves in 2011.
You should know: Varvaro, who led the Big East in strikeouts with 115 while pitching for St. John’s, has a degree in criminal justice.
