Marlins' Jose Fernandez named co-NL Player of the Week

After a memorable first season that led to National League Rookie of the Year and Cy Young finalist honors, Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez garnered another accolade for his performance during the opening week of the 2014 season.

Fernandez was named co-NL Player of the Week with Colorado outfielder Charlie Blackmon on Monday afternoon.

The 21-year-old posted a 2-0 record and a 0.71 ERA, striking out 17 batters and walking just two over 12 2/3 innings over his first two outings. Of his eight hits allowed, only one went for extra bases -- a homer to Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez -- for his only run surrendered.

In 2013, Fernandez (2.19) finished behind Los Angeles Dodgers and Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw (1.83) for the lowest ERA in baseball. Fernandez is 11-0 with a 1.14 ERA at home to start his career.

Miami's ace next pitches Friday night against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
