Marlins cap off tough road trip with 3rd straight loss to Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Miami's Mat Latos isn't letting all the trade rumors affect his focus.

"I don't pay attention to that stuff," Latos said after the Marlins' 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres. "I told (manager Dan Jennings) the same thing. I know this is all a business and they have to do what they feel they have to do make the ball club better in the future."

In his latest start with the Marlins, Latos gave up three runs and six hits in six innings, walking none and striking out five. Miami lost three straight to the Padres and didn't give up more than three runs in any of the outings.

"It's difficult to waste good pitching," Jennings said. "I thought Mat really settled down after the two runs. He did a nice job to give us that opportunity. He kept those guys at three runs, kept us in the game and gave us a chance."

Latos (4-7) failed in his fourth attempt to beat his former team.

"I didn't pitch well enough to win," he said. "I gave them three runs and we scored two. I got to make better pitches and maybe it's a tie ball game and we are going into extra innings."

Justin Upton homered and Odrisamer Despaigne pitched six solid innings as the Padres beat the Marlins for the ninth time in the last 11 games at Petco Park.

Upton, also mentioned in trade rumors, hit his 16th home run and singled. Yonder Alonso also had two hits.

"We've strung together some pretty good baseball," Upton said.

Despaigne (4-7) gave up a run and two hits with two walks and struck out three. He also hit a batter. The win was San Diego's third straight and Despaigne's first since beating the Pirates on May 31.

"From the start I feel good and was able to control my curveball today," Despaigne said.

J.T. Realmuto homered in the sixth off reliever Brandon Maurer to pull the Marlins to 3-2.

Joaquin Benoit pitched the eighth and Craig Kimbrel got the last three outs for his 29th save in 30 chances.

The Padres went ahead 3-1 in the sixth as Will Venable scored on Matt Kemp's ground out. Venable doubled and advanced to third on Yangervis Solarte's sacrifice bunt.

Despaigne, using a variety of speeds and arm angles, didn't allow a hit until Realmuto's single to open the fifth. Realmuto came around on Ichiro Suzuki's sacrifice fly, slicing the Padres' edge to 2-1. Kemp's running catch in right on Christian Yelich's drive ended the inning and prevented Miguel Rojas from scoring.

Upton led off the second with a homer. Alonso followed with a single and eventually scored on Alex Amarista's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage.
