Marlins beat right-hander Mat Latos in arbitration case

The Miami Marlins beat right-hander Mat Latos in an arbitration case Thursday.

Acquired from the Cincinnati Reds during December's winter meetings, Latos sought $10.4 million but will get $9.4 million in 2015.

The 27-year-old, who becomes a free agent after this season, went 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA in 16 starts (102 1/3 innings) in 2014 after being limited due to elbow and knee injuries. From 2012-13, he combined to go 28-11 with a 3.32 ERA over 420 frames. Over six big-league seasons with the Reds, Latos was 60-45 with a 3.34 ERA in 153 starts.

Miami dealt prospect Anthony DeSclafani and minor-league catcher Chad Wallach for Latos, who is from nearby Broward County. With ace Jose Fernandez recovering from Tommy John surgery, Latos and All-Star right-hander Henderson Alvarez are the candidates for the No. 1 spot in the rotation.

The Marlins must still go to arbitration cases with setup man Mike Dunn and righty David Phelps. The latter comes to Miami from the New York Yankees as part of the Martin Prado deal.
