Man arrested for climbing Mount Everest without permit was found hiding in cave

A South African man who was busted earlier this month for trying to climb Mount Everest by himself without the necessary $11,000 permit has been arrested, according to the BBC. 

After Ryan Sean Davy arrived at base camp and realized he didn't have the money to cover the cost of the permit, he decided to opt for a “stealth entry” so that he could “help anyone who might have been in trouble since every year there are so many fatalities,” he wrote on Facebook. 

A pair of government climbing officers spotted Davy as he was attempting his climb on May 5, a tourism official told the BBC, and he attempted to hide in a campsite he had set up in a cave.

The officials were able to find him, though. They took his passport away and told Davy he could retrieve it at the tourism department in the capital city of Kathmandu. Because he spent all this money on climbing gear, Davy made the 100-mile trek from base camp to Kathmandu by foot. 

When he finally arrived on Tuesday, Davy was arrested. He'll be in court on Wednesday, facing a $22,000 fine and the possibility of jail time.
