Love Theway Youare wins the Vanity
Love Theway Youare snapped an 11-race skid with a 2-1/2-length upset victory in the $250,000 Vanity Handicap on Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Ridden for the first time by Garrett Gomez, Love Theway Youare ran 1-1/8 miles on the synthetic Cushion Track in 1 minute, 51.10 seconds, the slowest time in the race's 59-year history. Love Theway Youare returned $38 on a $2 win bet at 18-1 odds in her first Grade 1 victory. Gomez won the race for the second straight year.
Love Theway Youare trailed for the first six furlongs.
''This filly just keeps staying, and she did so again,'' Gomez said. ''She kept coming and coming. She doesn't have any kind of gear; she's just one-paced the whole time.''
Include Me Out was second as the 3-5 favorite who carried high weight of 122 pounds. Zafeen's Pearl was another 6-3/4 lengths back in third.
''I thought I was gone,'' said Joe Talamo, who rode Include Me Out. ''Every time I've ridden her, I've always tried to steal the race at the quarter pole. That's a brutal way to get beat in a Grade 1.''
Love Theway Youare has three wins in 19 career starts and earnings of $362,990 for owner-trainer Myung Kwon Cho. Her last win was on April 22, 2011, at Betfair Hollywood Park.
In the $100,000 Willard L. Proctor Memorial Stakes for 2-year-olds, 7-10 favorite Amarish won by 4-1/2 lengths under Edwin Maldonado. The gelding ran 5-1/2 furlongs in 1:04.55 and paid $3.40 to win.
Moreno's Mine was second. Undrafted was another length back in third.
In the $100,000 Cinderella Stakes, Miss Empire and jockey Kevin Krigger won by 4-3/4 lengths. She ran 5-1/2 furlongs in 1:05 and paid $19.80 to win. Awesome Annie was second, and Tilde was another length back in third.
