Lions receive two compensatory draft picks

The NFL confirmed that the Detroit Lions will receive two of the 32 compensatory draft picks awarded to teams who lost free agents last year.

The Lions receive a pick at the end of the fourth round for losing cornerback Eric Wright to Tampa Bay and another pick at the end of the seventh round for losing quarterback Drew Stanton to the New York Jets (later traded to Indianapolis).

It gives the Lions a total of eight picks over the seven-round draft that will be held April 25-27.

The club traded its fourth-round pick to Minnesota to move up in last year's draft and select linebacker Tahir Whitehead in the fifth round.

Here is a breakdown of the Lions' upcoming draft picks:

1. Fifth pick of the first round.
2. Fourth pick of the second round.
3. Third pick of the third round.
4. Compensatory pick at end of fourth round, No. 132 overall.
5. Fourth pick of the fifth round.
6. Third pick of the sixth round.
7. Fifth pick of the seventh round.
8. Compensatory pick at end of seventh round, No. 245 overall.

FREE-AGENT UPDATE

Calvin Johnson joined teammates Ndamukong Suh, Nate Burleson and Dominic Raiola in restructuring his contract to create more room under the salary cap for the 2013 season.

The adjustments helped the Lions add running back Reggie Bush, safety Glover Quin and defensive end Jason Jones while also re-signing some of their own free agents.

However, don't expect another big free-agency deal for a end-high pass rusher or offensive lineman.

General manager Martin Mayhew told reporters covering the NFL meetings in Arizona that the Lions have finished the major part of their free-agent work.

Mayhew said they're still negotiating a deal for kicker Jason Hanson to return. He also didn't rule out the possibility of re-signing defensive end Lawrence Jackson, an unrestricted free agent.

But the juicy rumors such as Elvis Dumervil or Osi Umenyiora? Don't hold your breath.
