Kyle Larson: 'I bawled my eyes out' when baby son was born

It has been just more than a week since NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Larson became a first-time father when girlfriend Katelyn Sweet gave birth to a baby boy, Owen, on Dec. 22.

Larson, the 2014 Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year, told FOXSports.com in an exclusive interview Tuesday that like many new dads, his first week of fatherhood has been an eventful time.

So has there been one "welcome to fatherhood" moment that stands out above the rest?

"The other night, I guess, maybe was a welcome to fatherhood moment," said Larson, who is only 22 years old. "I was changing his diaper and he pooped mid-diaper change and got it all over the changing table. Maybe that was the welcome to fatherhood moment."

Aside from dealing with a few dirty diapers and adjusting to early-morning feedings, Larson's transition to fatherhood has gone about as well as he could have hoped.

"It's good. He's a really good baby," said Larson, whose son carried a healthy birth weight of nearly eight pounds. "He sleeps really good. We have to wake him up so he can eat every few hours and then he only cries when we change his diaper and stuff because he gets cold, but other than that, he's great."

"He must get the sleeping part from his mom," he said. "The sleeping and eating and all that, you know?"

In the moments surrounding little Owen's grand entry into the world at 11:09 p.m. ET on Dec. 22, his fast-driving father was admittedly overcome with emotion.

"I bawled my eyes out," Larson said. "I cried right when they told her to start pushing and all that, and then she pushed for a long time, so then you kind of get used to it, and then there towards the end I started losing my emotions again and started bawling my eyes out some more. It was just a really, really awesome experience and it's been great so far."

Kyle, who is widely known for his penchant for driving anything with four wheels, plans to compete in the popular Chili Bowl Midget Nationals scheduled for January 13-17 in Tulsa, Okla. Then, at the end of January, Larson will join up with Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Jamie McMurray to run the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona.

A couple weeks after the world-famous sports car race, it's back to Daytona for Speedweeks 2015 and the Feb. 22 running of the 57th annual Daytona 500 on FOX.

So when does new daddy Kyle anticipate his first-born child attending his first race?

"We're going to take him to the Chili Bowl in a couple weeks and then from there we'll all go to the Daytona 24 Hour race and then, yeah, he'll get to the 500 probably, I'm sure, if everything's still OK and he's doing fine with all the traveling and stuff," Larson said. "Like I said, he's been a good baby, so I don't see why he wouldn't enjoy it and be good at those races."
