Johnson's slam gives ASU softball dramatic win

Alix Johnson's grand slam in the top of the seventh inning gave the Arizona State softball team a dramatic 6-3 win over host Washington on Saturday.

Johnson's second grand slam and eighth homer of the year allowed the Sun Devils to rally for the win and improve to 41-5 overall and 13-2 in Pac-12 play.

Washington (36-13, 7-12) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when Kimberlee Souza homered to left, and the Huskies made it 3-0 on a two-run home run by Kaitlin Inglesby later in the same frame.

ASU answered in the top of the fourth when Annie Lockwood came home during an Amber Freeman at-bat to close the gap to 3-1.

Katelyn Boyd moved into second on the all-time doubles list at ASU in the fifth inning with her 51st career two-bagger. She is just three shy of the career record, currently held by Kaitlin Cochran. Boyd’s scored during the next at-bat on a Johnson triple to deep left, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The score remained the same until Johnson's slam in the seventh, which capped a 2-for-4 day and gave her five RBIs. Boyd finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Mackenzie Popescue picked up the win by going 3 2/3 innings after relieving Hillary Bach in the fourth. Popescue struck out two to improve to 7-1, while Inglesby dropped to 18-8.
