Iditarod competitor plunges knife into own leg in 'very stupid accident'

Iditarod "musher" Matthew Failor endured a painful injury on Tuesday during the treacherous 1,000-mile sled dog race in Alaska but it wasn't due to the great outdoors.

While attempting to cut a zip tie on his bag at a checkpoint, Failor's knife slipped and dug into his leg above the knee cap, creating a gash an estimated two centimeters deep and wide.

"My sock started filling up with blood," Failor, currently in 52nd place, told the Anchorage Dispatch News. "I definitely tore muscle."

"It was just an accident," the 33-year-old added. "Unfortunately, a very stupid accident."
