Horse killed, jockeys hospitalized at Aqueduct

A nasty spill in Saturday's third race at New York's Aqueduct killed one horse and sent two jockeys to the hospital.

Just after entering the far turn of the mile-and-a-16th race on the grass course for New York-breds, the 4-year-old gelding Ryan and Jack, ridden by 28-year-old apprentice jockey Jason Gracia, ran up behind another horse along the rail, clipped his heels and fell.

Just as Ryan and Jack was getting back on his feet, the 3-year-old gelding October Dreams, trailing the field under Jose Bermudez, broadsided him at full speed, slamming him back to the turf.

Ryan and Jack never got back up again; he suffered a fractured skull and was euthanized on-track.

Bermudez, unseated in the collision, was taken to North Shore Hospital for general evaluation.

Gracia, who might have either been stepped on by a horse or had one fall on him, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital suffering multi-system trauma. He reportedly was conscious in the ambulance.
