Has retirement squashed Cuban-Kidd feud?
When Jason Kidd snubbed the Dallas Mavericks last offseason and signed with the New York Knicks, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wasn't happy.
And he let the world know.
Cuban was asked on the Ben and Skin show last summer if Kidd's number would be retired in Dallas when Kidd stepped away from the league.
"As of now, I wouldn't put J. Kidd's number in the rafters," Cuban responded, despite Kidd's history with the franchise, including his help in winning the team's only NBA championship in 2011.
Cuban was admittedly angry with Kidd, who told the Mavericks he was going to resign with the team, but then changed his mind at the last moment. Cuban felt let down and snubbed ... and looked like he was going to hold a grudge against Kidd.
At the time, that question was just a hypothetical.
But, after Kidd announced his retirement on Monday, could cooler heads have prevailed and we might see an end to this beef between the two?
"Yeah, Cube reached out and sent me a nice note," Kidd said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. "Cube is one of, if not the best owner in sports and we were lucky to be with him when we won that championship."
Kidd was then asked if the two had patched things up, despite an icy relationship this past season where the two did not speak about each other when asked.
"Yeah, oh yeah, for sure," Kidd responded. "I will definitely reach out to Cube here in the near future for advice going forward."
Kidd was drafted by the Mavericks with the No. 2 overall pick in 1994. He wore both No. 5 and No. 2 in Dallas during his two stints with the team, and if Cuban were to change his mind about retiring his number in Dallas, Kidd doesn't care which one goes up, just as long as one does.
"Oh, whatever number he would like to put up, I'll be there," Kidd said. "You know, I wish I would have gotten 5 back when I came back the second time around, but I wouldn't mind (either one), just as long as my number went up.
"That would be just the best honor and the highlight of my career."
