Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally recovers from fall

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally has returned to his stable at Del Mar after a fall that required him to be hospitalized.

The 85-year-old was back at work Wednesday. He was attending a party after the races Sunday when his knee gave out and he fell, hitting his head on concrete. McAnally was removed on a stretcher and spent the night in a hospital undergoing tests.

McAnally never lost his sense of humor.

''When I was laying there on the ground, they asked me how I felt. I said, `About like Bob Baffert felt when (Arrogate) ran the other day,''' McAnally said. ''Even Baffert got a laugh out of that.''

Trained by Baffert, Arrogate lost in a stunning upset at Del Mar a day before McAnally fell.

McAnally is third on Del Mar's all-time winning trainers list with 444 behind leader Mike Mitchell and Baffert. His 77 stakes wins are second to Baffert's 121.
