Grapefruit League game roundup: March 11

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Top prospect Christian Yelich spoiled Jon Lester's five sharp innings, hitting a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth that lifted the Miami Marlins to an 8-7 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.
Lester allowed a first-inning run and three hits. He struck out four and retired the last 11 batters he faced.
Jackie Bradley Jr. homered on the game's first pitch and reached base four times. He went 3 for 4 to raise his average to .519 (14 for 27). Bradley added an RBI double in the fourth.
Miami's Kevin Slowey gave up three runs and two hits in three innings. He walked two and struck out five in his first spring start after previously throwing 6 1-3 scoreless relief innings.
Kevin Kouzmanoff's three-run double highlighted Miami's five-run seventh.

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Jake Arrieta struck out five over four scoreless innings, allowing two hits in the Baltimore Orioles' 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
Arrieta, the Orioles' opening-day starter last year, is competing for a job as the team's fifth starter. Left-hander Zach Britton, another of the candidates, allowed one run in two innings of relief, giving up an RBI double to Josh Harrison in the seventh.
Pirates left-hander Jeff Locke, also competing for a rotation job, gave up two runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings.
Baltimore's L.J. Hoes hit a two-out, RBI single in the second, and Lew Ford homered in the third.
Brad Hawpe, who played for Pirates manager Clint Hurdle in Colorado and is in camp as a non-roster invitee, homered in the eighth against Daniel Schlereth.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Derek Jeter went 0 for 2 in his second game as a designated hitter since returning from a broken ankle, a 4-0 win for the New York Yankees over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.
The Yankees captain was hurt Oct. 13 in the AL championship series opener. Jeter, who could play shortstop Wednesday, grounded out in the first and hit into a double play in the third.
Hiroki Kuroda gave up three hits and struck out six in four innings. Kevin Youkilis hit a fourth-inning solo homer off St. Louis starter Lance Lynn, who allowed one run and two hits over four innings.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny had surgery in St. Louis to repair a ruptured disk in his lower back. Bench coach Mike Aldrete is managing the team in his absence.

VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- Stephen Strasburg was dominant over five innings, then gave up four runs in the sixth as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Washington Nationals 7-2 Monday
Making his fourth spring training start, Strasburg faced just one batter over the minimum entering the sixth inning. But after retiring Christian Bethancourt on a flyout, Strasburg gave up a walk and three hits, including a two-run single by Justin Upton.
Atlanta starter Paul Maholm allowed two hits in five scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
B.J. Upton had an RBI single and Ernesto Mejia added a two-run double for Atlanta, both against reliever Zach Duke.
Bryce Harper went 1 for 3 for Washington, and closer Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless inning.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Jonathon Niese took another step toward earning an opening day start if Johan Santana is not ready, allowing one hit in 4 2-3 innings and leading the New York Mets to an 11-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
Tigers ace Justin Verlander had his first rocky outing of spring training, allowing five runs and two homers in 4 1-3 innings. He walked two, hit two batters, and balked home a run.
Niese, whose 13 wins last season is best among the Mets' returning starters, walked four with no strikeouts on a day that the wind was blowing out in Tigertown. He hasn't allowed a run against a major league team this spring.
Jordany Valdespin homered in the first inning, and Brian Bixler and Brandon Hicks also connected for the Mets. Valdespin later was hit by a pitch from Verlander and left the game.
